What exactly is powder coating?

Powder coating is a high-quality finish found on thousands of products you come in contact with each day.  Powder coating protects the roughest, toughest machinery as well as the household items you depend on daily.  It provides a more durable finish than liquid paints can offer, while still providing an attractive finish. Powder coating is an environmentally more friendly choice than typical liquid paint finishes because it lacks the harmful chemicals and solvents found in traditonal paint that is released into the air upon use.

 

The actual powder is a solvent free mix of plastic resins, pigments, and fillers that melt and fuse together when cured in an oven. The powder particles are electrostatically charged in a gun and are carried by air to the surface of the piece. This electrostatic charge holds the powder to the piece while it's being cured in the oven. The heat of the oven causes the powder to melt into a smooth coat.

 

The end result is an extremely durable, high quality finish that can be applied across intricate surfaces and still maintain a uniform look. Powder coating is about 10 times as strong as a traditional paint finish, and the color possiblites are absolutely endless.
